Thursday 17th March saw the University of Portsmouth’s annual Cheer off event take place at the Mountbatten Centre. The Sport and Recreation department worked in partnership with Portsmouth Phoenix, the University’s student cheerleading club, to recruit and train 17 cheerleading coaches.
The coaches worked under the University’s community outreach programme UP for Sport, delivering 10 weeks of coaching in 12 local Primary and Secondary schools, working hard in a bid to win the Cheer Off Winner title.
The Cheer Off is in it’s 7th year bringing together 230 local school children and 30 Portsmouth Phoenix members to give us a great show with lots of impressive performances. The judges from Phoenix were looking for cheer spirit, teamwork and sportsmanship among other elements of cheerleading and dance within each performance.
With more schools than ever taking part in the Cheer Off this year, the standard of performances was extremely high. Each school won an award including Best Tumbles, Cleanest Performance and Best Stunts. The overall winner for Primary was Meon Junior School, coached by Rachel Abbott and Ella Strutt, and the overall winner for Secondary was Mayfield School, coached by Erin Lockhart and Brooke Hockley. A big well done to everyone who took part and the winners, thank you to everyone for making the Cheer Off 2016 bigger than ever.
