How to get the most from your classes

Our fitness classes are extremely popular with our members, with over fifty classes happening each week! To help classes run smoothly, and for you to enjoy yourself, we’d like to ask our members to follow this simple guide of etiquette.

Last semester, 9,611 class spaces were booked, but only 7,904 were attended – that’s almost 18% of non-attendance! We want to provide all members a chance to enjoy our classes, so we’re about the implement a change on how our classes are booked.
Currently, you can book classes 7 days in advance. From 9th January onwards, you will only be able to book classes 3 days in advance. We are implementing this change to help reduce the number of cancellations and no-shows, which will effectively reduce waiting lists and ensure more members are able to attend our classes. We’ve also included some additional guidelines below, so you can get the most from your fitness class!
If you have any questions or feedback, please e-mail sport@port.ac.uk

Book with AppBooking classes couldn’t be easier!

The quickest way to book our classes is through our UOP Sport app, but you can also book online, over the phone, and in person at reception.

You can plan ahead and book your classes up to three days in advance, but we ask our members to only book classes you are definitely able to attend. Please don’t double book yourself – you can’t be in two places at once!

If a class is full, you can book onto the waiting list for that class. When a space becomes available, an automatic e-mail is sent to everyone on the waiting list. The e-mail will resend every 30 minutes until the space is taken and it is first-come-first-served.

Time LateCan’t attend? Don’t forget to cancel classes!

If you find you are unable to attend your class, you can cancel your booking without fear of penalty!

By cancelling your place, we will be able to offer it to another member on the waiting list. All we ask is you cancel no less than two hours before the class is due to start.

As outlined in our membership terms and conditions, if you fail to cancel a class, we will take the following steps:

2 non-attendances per week – E-mail sent to you with a reminder of our cancellation policy

3-4 non-attendances per week – App and online booking access will be removed for 1 week

5+ non-attendances per week – App and online booking access will be removed for 2 week

Arrive for the warm-up, stay for the cool-down!

Please arrive at least five minutes before the class is due to start, or even earlier if you can. Some of our classes require equipment set-up before starting, and that’s very difficult to do once the class starts! Our instructors also deliver important health and safety messages along with a warm-up at the start of each class, so it’s vital to arrive early for these.

Once the class has started, the door to the studio will be closed and you will not be allowed to enter. Entering after the class has started is very distracting for the instructor and not fair on other members. Our instructors have the right to refuse entry if you are late.

At the end of the class, the instructor will perform a vital cool-down – it’s important you take part to relax your muscles and help prevent future injuries. Please don’t start packing away equipment until advised by your instructor.

Don’t forget your ID Card!

When you arrive for your class, you’ll need to collect your class ticket from the kiosk in reception, or from the reception desk. To do this, you’ll need your Student ID, Staff ID or Community ID.

If you have forgotten your ID Card, speak to a staff member on the reception desk.

Before the class starts, your instructor will collect all tickets from each member or ask for you to place your ticket at the front of the studio. Please ensure you give your ticket in as it helps us to monitor class attendance.

Eat before exerciseStay safe and have fun!

Your health and safety is very important to us. If you are not feeling well or have any existing injuries, we advise you do not attend the class and rest! If you become unwell or injure yourself during a class, please inform the instructor immediately and do not force yourself through an exercise.

We recommend eating a light meal or snack a few hours before starting the class, and refuel within an hour afterwards.

Ensure you are hydrated before your class starts by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Have water available during your class also, but do not over consume as it could make you feel ill. Continue to drink after your class also.
