Annual Cheer Off brings together University student cheer coaches and local school children in an amazing performance!
Now in its 8th year, the University of Portsmouth’s annual Cheer Off event took place at the Mountbatten Centre on Wednesday 29th March.
The Department of Sport and Recreation worked in partnership with University of Portsmouth Cheerleading Club, Portsmouth Phoenix. They recruited and trained 14 lead coaches and 15 volunteer assistant coaches.
Working under the University’s community outreach programme, UP for Sport, coaches delivered ten weeks of coaching in 13 local primary and secondary schools. All schools and coaches worked hard in a big to win the Cheer Off Winner title.
The Cheer Off brought together 240 local school children and 30 Portsmouth Phoenix members. The performance provided a fantastic show with lots of impressive performances from each school.
This year, with more schools than ever taking part, the standard of performances was extremely high. On the day, each school received an award. Awards included ‘Best Tumbles’, ‘Cleanest Performance’ and ‘Best Stunts’.
As part of their judging criteria, judges from Portsmouth Phoenix were looking for ‘Cheer Spirit’, ‘Teamwork’ and ‘Sportsmanship’. Other elements of cheerleading and dance also influenced the decision of the judges.
The winner for Primary was Corpus Christi School, coached by Tyrah Noblemunn-Sweeney, Rachael Pearson and Chakade Fagan-Conteh. The winner for Secondary was Portsmouth High School, coached by Sophie Brace and Olivia Woods.
A big well done to everyone who took part and the winners! And thank you to everyone for making Cheer Off 2017 bigger than ever!
