  • There was a total of 136 participants across the different sports.
  • Congratulations to our winners: Rees Halls, Unilife and Trafalgar Halls!

 Dodgeball Halls Tournament

  • Winner: Rees Halls
  • Participants: 70
  • Teams: 9 Teams

The first of our tournaments was Dodgeball with over 70 participants. Hosted at Spinnaker Sports Centre, the tournament saw 9 teams compete in the initial group stages. The tournament progressed to a knockout stage to discover the winner.

In the groups stages, Rees Halls Team 1 came first in Group 1 with Trafalgar Halls placing second; both teams qualified for the knockout stage. Group 2 was won by Rees Team 2, placing Unilife Halls second.

In the semi-finals, Rees Halls Team 1 took on Unilife Halls and won comfortably to secure their spot in the final. Rees Halls Team 2 saw away opposition in Trafalgar Halls to reach the final match.

The final saw Rees Halls Team 2 take the victory after a close game against their Team 1 counterparts, and became the first half tournament winners.

Rees Halls resident and Illustration BA (Hons) student, Jenny, came along to support her team. She explained that initially the team was oversubscribed and had a lot of interest: “We’ve got a lot of team spirit! We’ve got a few friend groups together today who all signed up together – we initially had lots of people who wanted to take part and had to point them towards future events instead!”

Netball Halls Tournament

  • Winner: Unilife Halls
  • Participants: 38
  • Teams: 4

Our Netball Tournament took place during This Girl Can Week, with thanks from the University of Portsmouth Netball Club. We had 38 attendees, who contributed an impressive 4,560 minutes to our goal of 50,000 minutes of This Girl Can activity across the week.

Split into four teams, participants played each other in a league structure with 10 minute fixtures. Unilife Halls placed first.

Claudina Vaz, a Civil Engineering BEng (Hons) student in her forth year, really enjoyed the tournament – especially its social side: “Being able to play a social sport with your friends in a competitive way is great. Being able to play as a team, make friends and exercise while playing a sport – and building good bonds with teammates – is really fun!”

International Relations BA (Hons) student and Rees Halls team mate, Matthew Addison, commented: “This is the third time we’ve done Halls Tournaments, and we love it! It’s well organised and fun. A few of us are on the University Team, which is so serious – this is a nice break. Everyone’s fair and friendly and just gets on with it – I would highly recommend it.”

Well done to everyone who took part, and thank you to everyone who provided support on the day!
