Friday 29th January saw the University of Portsmouth’s annual Junior Dance Off event take place at New Theatre Royal. The Junior Dance Off is in it’s 12th year, bringing together University student dance coaches, 240 local school children and 50 local street dance performers.
The Sport and Recreation department worked in partnership with University of Portsmouth Dance Club, recruiting and training 14 members to deliver street dance coaching in 11 local primary schools. Working under the University’s community outreach programme UP for Sport, coaches delivered 10 weeks of coaching in schools to pupils aged 10-11 years, working hard in a bid to win the Junior Dance Off Winner title.
There was much excitement and anticipation during the day as everyone arrived at the theatre to start rehearsals and when the doors opened that evening for the audience to take their seats. This year’s theme of the competition was ‘At the Movies’ and we had performances including Toy Story, Harry Potter, Grease and Oliver Twist. Performances were judged on stage presence, interpretation of theme, characterisation and many other elements of dance by University Dance Club committee members.
We had special guest performances from University of Portsmouth Dance Club showing a mix of their contemporary and hip hop dancers. Along with young performers from local street dance school Most Wanted, it was clear the pupils and audience were blown away by the talent shown by all of our guest performers. The standard of the school’s performances were higher than ever this year, with each and every school showing off their hard work by wowing the audience with their performance.
But as with every competition, there can only be 1 winner. The winner of the Junior Dance Off 2016 was The Victory Primary School, coached by Shannon Halls. We’d like to thank everyone involved for their commitment and effort in making this year’s event bigger than ever. Thank you.
