Hundreds of University of Portsmouth females got active for ‘This Girl Can’ week, clocking over 75,000 minutes of activity!
This Girl Can is a nation-wide campaign by Sport England, designed to empower females to get more active.
Our campaign ran from Monday 20th – Sunday 26th November 2017.
The campaign was run in partnership between Sport and Recreation and the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union.
With a goal of 50,000 active minutes, together we achieved over 75,000 minutes of activity!
Our key achievements include:
75,471 minutes of activity
Along with the University of Portsmouth Students’ Union, we provided a selection of free sports and activities across ‘This Girl Can’ week. We wanted to help empower females to become more active in their everyday lives.
‘This Girl Can’ week saw 63 sports sessions and activities take place across 20th-26th November. The schedule was designed to help break down the barriers women often face in exercise, and encourage women to try new activities and get active.
All sessions were free, including various Get Active, Stay Active drop-in sports sessions, Les Mills Virtual Classes, Athletic Union club sessions and various Society taster sessions. Sport and Recreation also hosted a dedicated Zumba class, Female Free Weights workshop, a Krav Maga self-defence taster and a Racketathon, where women took part in table tennis, badminton and short tennis.
The most popular and busiest session of the week was our Halls Netball Tournament, which had 38 participants, contributing an amazing total of 6,840 minutes to our goal! An attendee of the tournament said: “The session was really enjoyable and well organised! I really enjoyed playing more Netball and trying different drills!”
“Being able to play a social sport with friends in a competitive way is great! Building good bonds with teammates and making friends while getting exercise is fun!”
Claudina Vaz, 4th Civil Engineering student and Halls Netball Tournament attendee
With an incredible 727 participants across the week, we believe ‘This Girl Can’ week was a great success! Participants were also encouraged to use #ThisPortsmouthGirlCan across social media, as a sign of solidarity and creating conversations about women in sport.
During the week, our dedicated Facebook group, ‘This Girl Can Portsmouth UOP‘ reached a milestone of over 1,000 members. The supportive group provides a platform for females at the University to discuss sports, exercise, and other questions in a free and non-judgemental environment.
We’d like to thank everyone who got involved, and we hope you all stay active!
This Girl Can
This nationwide campaign is a celebration of active women, encouraging them to do their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look, or even how red their face gets.
As creators of the campaign, Sport England works to tell the ‘real’ story of women in sport, whilst encouraging women to get involved and get active. This Girl Can launched in 2015 after research showed that 75% of women wanted to be more active, with 2 million less women than men playing sport regularly.
