Volunteers of the Month (December): Matin, Chris & Frank

Congratulations to our Volunteers of the Month: Matin Sedighi, Chris Newman & Frank Hampton!

Matin Sedighi – Futsal Activator and Activator of the Month (December)

As Futsal Activator, Matin helps to promote and manage our Campus Sport Futsal league. During semester one, this consisted of overseeing six teams. He organised the weekly fixtures, communicated with the league participants, and published updates and results to social media.

In addition to this, Matin has also supported our Futsal Co-ordinator in delivering a weekly drop-in session every Thursday. Matin has attended every session so far, making all attendees feel welcome. As an excellent communicator, Matin has been approachable to all, chatting to attendees,  answering any questions, and always engaging with a wide audience.

Whilst actively looking to improve our futsal offering at the University, Matin has been assessing our current futsal coaches and referees, to help identify areas for potential development. Using his initiative, he has also identified ways to reward players for their successes, and even secured an additional prize for the league finalists!

Matin is a valued member of the team, and we are impressed with how dedicated and enthusiastic he is about his role. Thanks Matin!

Christian Newman – Referee of the Month (November)

Undertaking our referee course last year, this is the first year Chris has spent a full season as a referee. Mainly officiating in our Sunday 11-a-side football league, Chris has excelled within his role. He has demonstrated fantastic ability by challenging himself, ensuring he is constantly improving.

This season, he has also undertaken the chance to referee our Campus Sport Futsal league. These fast-paced matches have helped him to refine and develop his skill set, whilst also providing valuable hands-on experience.

Chris has proven to be a reliable referee, often covering shifts at short notice at both our small sided leagues and youth games. Looking to improve himself even further, Chris has also gained additional experience as an assistant referee through Portsmouth College and the University of Portsmouth Men’s Football BUCS team. Keep up the good work Chris!

Frank Hampton – Referee of the Month (October)

During the month of October, Frank displayed great commitment within his refereeing role. In a short space of time he has gained a wide range of experience, including: refereeing academy games for Portsmouth College; refereeing youth games at the University; and refereeing numerous times on our small-sided leagues.

As this is Frank’s first full season as a qualified referee, we have been impressed with his attitude so far. It has been fantastic to see him getting involved in as much as possible. Well done Frank – keep up the good work!

Interested in becoming an Activator?

Our Activators and Coordinators are a team of student volunteers who help to run the ‘Get Active, Stay Active‘ programme. The programme is available all year round to students and staff at the University of Portsmouth. The sessions are either free-of-charge or at reduced costs. There are over 50 sessions a week in 25 sports available – and membership is free!

If you’re interested in becoming an Activator for a particular sport, or want to know more about our Get Active programme, please contact alex.cole@port.ac.uk.

Interested in becoming a Referee?

Our Referee Hub is one of the many sports development opportunities available to students at the University of Portsmouth. We help qualified coaches gain valuable experience through paid roles and placements within our leagues and local communities. We also help students to gain FA Basic Referee qualifications by covering all costs, in return for a few hours of referee volunteering.

If you’re interested in becoming a referee, or looking to help out officiate at our matches, please contact rachel.robilliard@port.ac.uk.
