Congratulations to our Volunteers of the Month: Hannah Divall & Matt South!
Hannah Divall – Badminton Activator and Activator of the Month (March)
As Badminton Activator, Hannah has led her Badminton team to reach 880 attendances across our two Get Active drop-in sessions, campus sport league and tournaments.
Hannah also successfully ran her first UV Badminton tournament this month which allowed students to de-stress and play their favourite sport with a twist.
What is UV Badminton? The sport hall lights go off, UV lights are turned on and special tape, shuttles and other equipment brings the hall to life; which is then topped off with a bit of music. Hannah organised this event superbly, was proactive and efficient, and regularly communicated with the participants via a facebook event to ensure attendance.
When asked about her Badminton Activator role, Hannah said:
“I am very passionate about badminton so being the badminton activator this year has been the perfect role for me. My role allows me to encourage other students to play badminton and enjoy it as much as I do. This role has helped me develop so many different skills including confidence, communication and commitment through the sessions as well as regular activator training. I have met so many great people being an activator and had great support from the sport and rec department and my amazing coordinators. The highlight of my time being an activator is running a UV badminton event which was a great success and extremely fun to run and play. I am so glad I got to be an activator this year and really encourage other students to take the opportunity as I did.“
Well done Hannah, keep up the good work!
Matt South – Referee of the Month (March)
Matt undertook the referee course with us last year and this is his first full season as a referee. He officiates on our Wednesday 6-a-side league and has done a fantastic job of challenging himself to ensure he is constantly improving.
Matt has refereed our 6-a-side final twice as well as earning himself a role back home coordinating his local small sided football league. Matt has also been happy to cover both our small sided leagues and youth games at short notice.
He has shown great consistency and commitment to the Referee Hub by always being available for his shifts, turning up to all of the CPD workshops we run and attending all of our social events.
Keep up the good work Matt!

Interested in becoming a Referee?
Our Referee Hub is one of the many sports development opportunities available to students at the University of Portsmouth. We help qualified coaches gain valuable experience through paid roles and placements within our leagues and local communities. We also help students to gain FA Basic Referee qualifications by covering all costs, in return for a few hours of referee volunteering.
If you’re interested in becoming a referee, or looking to help out officiate at our matches, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
