Volunteers of the Month (January): Charlie & Talen

Congratulations to our Volunteers of the Month: Charlie Fouracres & Talen Hamilton!

Charlie Fouracres – Handball Activator and Activator of the Month (January)

As Handball Activator, Charlie has retained regular numbers in her Handball drop-in sessions through her positive and engaging personality.

Due to the commitment Charlie has put in since the beginning of the year, the popularity of the sport has grown on campus, with an increase in members to the University of Portsmouth Handball Society. This has resulted in the society entering its first friendly tournament against University of Brighton and Eastbourne Handball Club. University of Portsmouth won both games they played. With first this experience playing as a team outside of our Get Active sessions, this success has set a large milestone for the society.

When asked why she likes Handball, and why others should try it, Charlie said:

I love handball because it’s fast, tactical and fun! It’s amazing to watch how far it’s come as a sport and it’s good to see new players enjoying it as much as I do.  It’s a good game to play with anyone and until you try it, you don’t know what you’re missing out on! Anyone can play – it’s easy to pick up and it’s just enjoyable.”

Charlie has also gone above and beyond her role by regularly covering other Activators and their sports, plus filling in for sessions we are currently recruiting for. These sessions would not have gone ahead without her. Thanks Charlie!

Talen Hamilton – Referee of the Month (January)

Talen has been thoroughly committed to our Referee Hub this month, covering our Community Youth Football fixtures, as well as officiating on our weekly Staff 5-a-side Campus Sport League.

As well as enhancing his personal development by completing his FA Safeguarding qualification, Talen has attended our in-house Referee CPD session. He remained fully engaged throughout the session along with a number of other student referees. Talen continues to be a team player within our programme and is always happy to cover shifts when necessary, demonstrating a positive approach and flexibility to various situations. Thanks Talen!

Interested in becoming an Activator?

Our Activators and Coordinators are a team of student volunteers who help to run the ‘Get Active, Stay Active‘ programme. The programme is available all year round to students and staff at the University of Portsmouth. The sessions are either free-of-charge or at reduced costs. There are over 50 sessions a week in 25 sports available – and membership is free!

If you’re interested in becoming an Activator for a particular sport, or want to know more about our Get Active programme, please contact alex.cole@port.ac.uk.

Interested in becoming a Referee?

Our Referee Hub is one of the many sports development opportunities available to students at the University of Portsmouth. We help qualified coaches gain valuable experience through paid roles and placements within our leagues and local communities. We also help students to gain FA Basic Referee qualifications by covering all costs, in return for a few hours of referee volunteering.

If you’re interested in becoming a referee, or looking to help out officiate at our matches, please contact rachel.robilliard@port.ac.uk.
